The Tennessee Department of Health’s (TDH) Environmental Epidemiology Program (EEP) participates in a cooperative agreement program with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). We, along with 24 other states, use the Cooperative Agreement Program funds to build our ability to evaluate and respond to environmental public health issues. With ATSDR funding, we work to identify exposure pathways at specific sites; educate affected communities and local health professionals about site contamination and potential health effects; review health outcome data to evaluate potential links between site contaminants and community health outcomes. For each site we:
- Evaluate environmental exposures and recommend ways to protect people’s health
- Prepare environmental reports based on our findings
- Get communities involved in public health activities and supply health education materials to those communities
- Give technical help to communities, states, tribes, and other agencies
- Work with ATSDR and help with environmental justice activities
We link this funding and work with our Healthy Homes program to protect homeowners from unforeseen exposures to chemicals. If homeowners would like to find out if an environmental site is near their home or neighborhood there are a number of websites available to help with your search. The websites listed below direct you to our program and sites we have worked on in our 19 year partnership with ATSDR. Other links connect to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) database on environmental factors such as water quality, air quality, and health statistics in your local area, as well as listings of EPA National Priority List Superfund sites within your state or county.
